National Racoon survey is active

A new national survey of raccoon (Procyon lotor) has recently been activated on NSM.

This unmistakable mammal is listed among the 100 most dangerous alien species in Europe (DAISIE, 2009). It is a medium size carnivore, with unmistakable looks: ringed tail and a black mask on the eyes. It is naturally distributed from South Canada to Central America and feeds on a wide variety of animal and plant species, up to garbage in urban areas. Although the impacts of this species in the introduction arena are still to be analyzed, monitoring its distribution is indispensable to keep in check its possible expansion in Europe, through targeted protocols and management plans.
